Improvements for Swepsonville River Park in Alamance County

ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — The new caretakers of Swepsonville River Park are not wasting any time in making improvements at the Alamance County park.
“Just trying to beautify the place a little bit. It was already in good shape when we got it and just trying to protect the resource here,” said Brian Baker, director of Alamance County Recreation and Parks.
The parks department is now maintaining one of the oldest parks along the Haw River. Swepsonville River Park was opened by the Town of Swepsonville in 2004. The 30 acres of land at the confluence of the Haw River and Big Alamance Creek quickly became a popular place for locals and hikers along the Haw River Trail. With 75,000 people visiting the park each year, the small town of Swepsonville turned the park over to Alamance County.
“This is what we do as a parks department,” Baker said. “We have the tools to get it done so we took over this park and operate it.”

President Trump pledges to support HBCUs

Today President Donald Trump signed an executive order pledging to make supporting Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) a priority at the White House.
The signing comes after other meetings and discussions this week involving more than 80 HBCU leaders, including chancellors and presidents from Bennett College, Winston-Salem State University and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.
A big part of the conversation for leaders is adequate funding.
“There are discussions that we need to have around resources that have typically flown to predominately white institutions more abundantly than they have to HBCUs, so that has created inequalities over generations that have significantly disadvantaged places like this,” said Todd Simmons, associate vice chancellor for University Relations at North Carolina A&T.

St. Louis Fed’s Bullard says balance sheet reduction should start now

March 1, 2017
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – With its inflation and unemployment goals in sight the U.S. central bank should begin decreasing the size of the mammoth balance sheet accumulated during its battle against the 2007 to 2009 financial crisis, St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank President James Bullard said on Tuesday.
Maintaining the Fed’s current $4.4 trillion in securities and other assets as it begins to raise its policy rate, Bullard said, means the central bank is in effect pushing up short-term borrowing costs while its asset holdings pull down long-term rates.
That “twist” in the yield curve is something the Fed has not debated as a policy choice, Bullard said, and could be prevented by letting the balance sheet begin to shrink. As it stands the Fed reinvests any Treasury or mortgage holdings that mature each month, maintaining its total stock of holdings. It has said that practice would continue until the process of raising interest rates to a more normal level was “well underw..

Hershey to cut global workforce by about 15 percent

March 1, 2017
(Reuters) – Hershey Co , maker of Hershey’s Kisses and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, said on Tuesday it would cut its global workforce by about 15 percent as part of a restructuring program.
The company said it would book pre-tax charges of $375 million-$425 million related to the plan and expected to save $150 million-$175 million by the end of 2019.
The company also cut its 2017 profit forecast to $3.19-$3.45 per share from $4.54-$4.65 per share estimated earlier.
As of Dec. 31, the company had about 16,300 full-time employees worldwide and employed 1,680 on part-time basis.
Hershey’s new chief executive, Michele Buck, said he would discuss the company’s plans at an investor conference in New York on Wednesday.
The U.S. chocolate maker has been pinning its hopes on Buck, who takes over from John Bilbrey on the same day, to build on a recovery in demand in North America.
The company’s shares were down marginally at $107.95 in extended trading on Tuesday.

Fed officials jolt market with talk of pending rate hike

March 1, 2017
By Ann Saphir and Jonathan Spicer
SANTA CRUZ, Calif./NEW YORK (Reuters) – A handful of Federal Reserve policymakers on Tuesday jolted markets into higher expectations for a March U.S. interest rate increase, with comments that suggested rate-setters are worried about waiting too long in the face of pending economic stimulus from Washington.
New York Fed President William Dudley, among the most influential U.S. central bankers, said on CNN that the case for tightening monetary policy “has become a lot more compelling” since the election of President Donald Trump and a Republican-controlled Congress.
John Williams, President of the San Francisco Fed, meanwhile, said that with the economy at full employment, inflation headed higher, and upside risks from potential tax cuts waiting in the wings, “I personally don’t see any need to delay” on raising rates. “In my view, a rate increase is very much on the table for serious consideration at our March meeting.”
