Compton is accused in the slaying of 46-year-old David Earl Nowlin, who died after being attacked on the 1900 block of Wabash Street in the city’s East Colfax neighborhood, police say. On Tuesday, the Denver medical examiner ruled his death a homicide from sharp force injuries.

Nowlin, a Denver man, was pronounced dead at Denver Health Medical Center.

Police have released few details in the slaying, including what they believe was the motive. They said Nowlin was assaulted.

“Because this is an open homicide investigation, we can’t provide detail about what led up to the homicide,” said Doug Schepman, another Denver police spokesman. “(We) can confirm that the suspect and victim were known to each other and that this was not a random incident.”

Schepman did not elaborate on how they knew each other.
